Atlanta Journal Constitution

The Atlanta spa shootings on March 16th, left eight people dead where six of the victims were women of  Asian descent who worked at the spas.  It’s an unfathomable and horrendous crime occurring in the midst of a pandemic.  Coincidentally, there has been an exponential spike in hate crimes and incidents of verbal and physical assaults on Asians both in the U.S. and worldwide.  It goes without saying, this shooting had people, especially Asians wondering if it was racially-motivated.

Police arrested 21-year-old Robert Aaron Long of Georgia for the shooting.  Authorities said Long committed the heinous crime because of his sex addiction where he wanted to rid himself of temptation.  Long had indicated being a religious man and denied any racist motivation.  Therein lies the rub-some Americans struggle to see criminal acts from an ethnic minority’s perspective.

Critics often ask why I have to talk about issues related to race and culture.  To them, it’s as if I’m the one inciting racial strife and division by discussing these issues but if I stopped, they believe we’d magically live in racial bliss and harmony here in the U.S.

Yet, here in my hometown of Seattle, Washington, this week’s resignation of Kevin Mather, the CEO of the Seattle Mariners was indicative of how much race is an issue, especially to those like Mather who espouse disdain, contempt, and hostility towards those of us who aren’t as “American” as he is.
